The Isosceles Stance
Is it right for you?
My father, a police academy firearms instructor once told me, " If your feet are pointed at the target then you will hit the target". He was speaking of the isosceles stance. Go to any range and you will see a variety of stances. What works well for an individual shooter, well it just works. However read below and see if this stance could be right for you.
The isosceles is taught mainly to beginners. I have known active military and law enforcement officers who use it and swear by it. The name comes from the isosceles formed from your squared shoulders and extended arms. Here is the run down of a correct isosceles stance:
1) Stand with your feet shoulder width apart pointing at the target.
2) Slightly bend your knees.
3) Extend both arms straight and lock your elbows.
In a real world scenario the isosceles may not be the way to go depending on a variety of factors. However there is nothing wrong with having a new tool in the toolbox. There are many stances and their modifications. Do what works for you. For example I shoot iosceles but keep my elbows relaxed instead of locked. I am more comfortable in that position and it works. Next time your at the range give the isosceles a try if you haven't already. You may find a new stance your comfortable with and your accuracy may improve.
Safe shooting.
